Question

How racist is it to be wary of Italian bistros that are staffed entirely by Chinese people*?

*Sushi restaurants run only by Mexicans, etc.

i like hip hop and basketball, and i'm white

maybe that's cementing your theory

There's no theory. I'm not saying I AM wary, just wondering how racist it would be to BE wary.

... but yeah, the question for you then would be how good are you at hip hop and basketball?

How racist would it be? More racist than you could possibly imagine.

Well, probably not but such concerns remain essentially racist. Quite difficult to avoid really when it comes to ethnic eating.

How do you mean 'hard to avoid'? By patrons, by management playing on ethnic stereotypes relating to food ...?

I choose:

c) All of the above

The thing with ethnic eateries is that they tend to market and brand themselves in a way that plays into patron expectations of authenticity. The thing with patrons is that they tend to assume those preparing the food are of the same or similar ethnicity as the food they are preparing.

Objectively speaking, this isn't to say madame's risotto di funghi with black truffle wouldn't be delicious irrespective of whether prepared by a sweaty Chinese chef or a swarthy stereotype of the Neapolitan persuasion. That said, the eating experience plays into the idea of the latter rather than the former.

I don't know if that even vaguely answers your question but I haven't gone over the politics of ethnicity and culture for a fair few years now.

I don't eat at restaurants that are obviously run by people that aren't from the same place as the food.
